Pilots’ Confidence Using a Speech Recognition System to Submit Pilot Reports

Journal of Aerospace Information Systems, Vol 22, No 4, April 2025

Pilot reports (PIREPs) are an essential source of weatherinformation in the National Airspace System. PIREPs are brief weather reports made by pilots describing their current in-flight weather conditions. PIREPs can make current and forecasted weather information more accurate. Pilots with access to PIREPs can help them avoid flying into hazardous weather and allowmeteorologists to revise weather forecasts. However, to update forecasted weather, meteorologists must receive many PIREPs. The purpose of the study was to determine pilot perception in how confident pilots are in the ability of SRSs to accurately tran-scribe and submit PIREPs automatically in three cockpit noiseregimes (low, medium, and high). The research question was the following: What is the pilot’s trust in using an SRS to transcribe and submit PIREPs automatically in 3/2, 5/4, and 1/1 SNR configurations, which corresponded to low, medium, and high noise levels?
